Gasp! You want to wear what together? Just kidding! Nowadays, it’s completely ok to wear this infamous color combination together. It seems just a few decades ago mixing black and brown became a huge fashion faux pas, however, fashion moves fast and just as we’ve memorized the rules they seem to up and change on us. That’s all part of the fun though!
Here are three guidelines to help you create the perfect black and brown outfit:
Think in pairs
Sometimes having just one brown piece thrown into an entire outfit of black can seem like an odd afterthought. Instead, if you think in pairs you’ll overcome this problem quickly. For example: If you’re wearing a black dress try wearing a brown belt with brown boots. You could also pair a brown cardigan and belt with a black t-shirt and skinny jeans.
Two toned pieces
The best way to tie things together is to incorporate a two toned piece into your ensemble. Two really great ways to do this are by adding something either leopard or tortoiseshell. Both patterns combine black and brown in a great way! You can also let a two toned piece speak for itself, like the Cubism dress below. For example: If you’re wearing all black add a brown jacket, brown boots and a leopard clutch.
Light to start
When you’re first starting to mix these two colors together it can feel a bit odd. If you start out using a lighter brown it will feel more purposeful and less ‘oops I dressed in the dark’. When you’ve mastered this then feel free to incorporate any shade of brown you choose. Sky’s the limit!
The most important thing to remember is not to get too caught up on the many different fashion rules, because for every rule there’s an adorable outfit that breaks it! Style is meant to be personal, so go ahead a play a bit.
Like Yves Saint Laurent said “Fashions fade, style is eternal”.
Until next time!
